Pilsner Urquell

Rich Czech pilsner with floral hops and bitterness. The world's first golden lager — Saaz-hopped, soft-water and triple-decocted, deep gold with a spicy-floral bite and a long, bittersweet finish.

The Brewer's Tale

Heritage

The Brewery

Brewed in Plzeň (Pilsen), Bohemia since 5 October 1842, when Bavarian brewmaster Josef Groll tapped the world's first pale lager at the city's new Burghers' Brewery.

The names Pilsner Urquell and Plzeňský Prazdroj — ‘the original source of pilsner’ — were trademarked in 1898. It is still made only in Plzeň, today by Plzeňský Prazdroj, part of Japan's Asahi Group.

The Pour

A golden Czech pilsner built on triple decoction, soft Plzeň water and three additions of Saaz hops: bright gold, a full malt body, spicy-floral hop character and a clean, lingering bitterness.

Best poured with a thick, creamy hladinka head.

The Original

More than two-thirds of the beer brewed on earth today is pale lager — and nearly all of it traces back to this one brewery. Every ‘pils’, ‘pilsner’ and ‘pilsener’ is named after it.

At The Table

A natural with Czech pub food — svíčková, goulash, and roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut (vepřo-knedlo-zelo) — or anything off the grill.
